Approach
Your Firm's Environmental Practice Group provides services encompassing all aspects of environmental legal issues facing manufacturing and industrial clients, real estate developers, builders, contractors, agribusiness clients, utilities and lenders. We take an approach that emphasizes environmental compliance in all business decisions and proactively identifies and manages all potential environmental obligations and liabilities.

Attorneys
Our team has more than a century of experience providing reliable, cost-effective environmental legal services. Members of our environmental team have served in government and private industry.  We maintain key relationships with regulators and legislators and effectively work with technical staff and environmental consultants to find innovative approaches and technologies. Many of our attorneys are listed in the Environmental Law Section of The Best Lawyers in America.

Clients
We work with manufacturing and industrial clients and trade associations, including chemical manufacturers, tanners, platers, foundries, paper mills and utilities; agricultural clients and trade associations, including herbicide and pesticide manufacturers and retailers; agricultural producers and processors; developers and builders; and municipal governments. Our clients range from large national and regional corporations to smaller local concerns.

Practice
The group provides skilled and knowledgeable legal representation in all substantive areas of environmental law, including:

  • state and federal soil and groundwater cleanup and corrective action programs;
  • air and water pollution control and permitting;
  • hazardous materials management;
  • navigable waters and wetland permitting and
  • public trust doctrine issues;
  • natural resource damage assessment and response activities;
  • landfill, power-plant, ethanol-plant and livestock-operation siting;
  • land use regulation;
  • brownfield redevelopment; and
  • governmental enforcement-action defense.

We also assist commercial and residential builders with the emerging environmental challenge of mold and other indoor air quality issues such as lead paint and asbestos.

Grants, Insurance and Other Funding Sources
We have an extensive environmental insurance cost recovery practice. When environmental obligations and liabilities exist, we team with our clients to assemble appropriate funding sources, including other potentially responsible parties, insurance coverage, and local, state and federal grants and programs.

Litigation
Our attorneys are experienced in administrative contested-case hearings and enforcement defense, and have been successful in using mediation as a cost-effective alternative to litigation.

Government Relations
We emphasize positive communication with local, state and federal agencies.  Our attorneys regularly represent clients in individual cases, as well as policy development in the context of administrative agency rulemaking and legislative lobbying.  We work and maintain contacts with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Public Service Commission (PSC), the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP), the Department of Commerce (COMM), the Department of Health and Family Services (DHFS) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA).
